MICKAGEAR — PRODUCT SAFETY & USE POLICY
Last updated: 09/10/26
Important Safety Information
Roof-top tents, ladders, roof-rack systems, mounting equipment and camping products must be installed and used correctly.
Incorrect installation or use can result in serious injury, property damage or death.
Always read and follow the manufacturer’s instructions, safety warnings and product specifications before installation or use.
This policy provides general safety guidance for products sold by Mickagear. It does not replace the instructions, warnings or specifications supplied with an individual product.
1. Before You Buy
Before purchasing a roof-top tent or vehicle-mounted product, you should confirm that the product is suitable for your vehicle and existing equipment.
This includes checking:
- vehicle specifications;
- vehicle roof load limits;
- roof-rack specifications and load ratings;
- dynamic load capacity while driving;
- static load capacity while stationary;
- mounting-point compatibility;
- tent and accessory weights;
- occupants’ combined weight;
- ladder load rating; and
- any additional equipment or accessories that will be carried.
Load limits and compatibility requirements can differ between vehicles, roof-rack systems and products.
If you are uncertain whether a product is suitable for your vehicle or equipment, contact the relevant manufacturer or obtain appropriate professional advice before purchasing or installing it.
2. Installation
Installation must be completed in accordance with the manufacturer’s instructions.
Before use, check that:
- all required mounting hardware is present;
- all fasteners are correctly installed and secured;
- all required bolts, brackets and clamps are fitted correctly;
- the tent is correctly positioned;
- the mounting system is properly attached to the vehicle or roof rack;
- the ladder is correctly attached or positioned; and
- there is no visible damage to the product or mounting components.
Installation and mounting hardware should be checked periodically in accordance with the manufacturer’s recommendations. Vibration, use, weather and vehicle movement may affect mounting hardware over time.
If you are unsure whether installation has been completed correctly, do not use the equipment until it has been appropriately checked.
3. Load Limits
Never exceed the manufacturer’s specified load ratings.
Different load ratings may apply when a vehicle is:
- being driven;
- parked;
- supporting a roof-top tent; or
- supporting occupants inside a tent.
The applicable vehicle, roof-rack, tent and mounting-system specifications must be followed.
Do not assume that a vehicle’s roof load rating automatically determines the safe occupancy capacity of a roof-top tent.
Consider the combined weight of occupants, bedding and other items, as well as any restrictions specified by the relevant manufacturers.
If load limits or compatibility requirements are unclear, seek confirmation from the relevant manufacturer before use.
4. Ladder Safety
Always use the ladder in accordance with the manufacturer’s instructions.
Before climbing:
- Check that the ladder is correctly installed or positioned.
- Check that the ladder is stable and properly supported.
- Check that the tent and vehicle are suitably positioned.
- Check that the ladder and its attachment points are undamaged.
- Check the applicable weight limit.
- Ensure the area around the ladder is clear of obstacles and hazards.
Never climb a ladder that is damaged, loose or unstable.
Never exceed the ladder’s rated capacity.
Never jump from the tent or ladder.
Use care when climbing, particularly in wet, slippery or windy conditions. Children should be appropriately supervised around ladders and elevated equipment.
5. Ground and Vehicle Position
Where possible, park on firm, stable and reasonably level ground.
Avoid locations where the vehicle may move, roll, sink, become unstable or be exposed to environmental hazards.
Engage the vehicle’s parking brake and follow the vehicle manufacturer’s recommendations for safe parking.
Before opening or using a roof-top tent, ensure the vehicle is positioned safely and that the tent and ladder can be deployed as instructed by the manufacturer.
Do not use the equipment if the vehicle or ground conditions make the setup unstable or unsafe.
6. Weather
Weather conditions can change rapidly.
Strong winds, storms, lightning, heavy rain, flooding, extreme temperatures and other environmental conditions may create hazards.
Users must assess conditions before and during use and follow the manufacturer’s recommendations.
If conditions become unsafe, discontinue use and take appropriate steps to protect people and property. Follow the manufacturer’s instructions for securing, closing or packing away equipment in adverse weather.
7. Inspection Before Use
Before each use, inspect relevant equipment for:
- loose hardware;
- damaged brackets or mounting points;
- damaged or unstable ladders;
- cracked, bent or distorted components;
- worn or damaged straps;
- damaged fabric or structural components;
- missing fasteners;
- corrosion or deterioration; and
- any other visible signs of damage or abnormal wear.
Do not use equipment that appears damaged, defective or unsafe.
If a problem is identified, stop using the equipment until it has been appropriately assessed and any necessary repairs or replacements have been completed in accordance with the manufacturer’s requirements.
8. Children
Children must be appropriately supervised around roof-top tents, ladders and elevated camping equipment.
Do not permit children to use equipment in a manner contrary to the manufacturer’s instructions or safety warnings.
Ensure children understand that climbing, jumping or playing on ladders and elevated camping equipment can be dangerous.
9. Modification
Do not drill, cut, weld, alter or otherwise modify structural or safety-related components unless the manufacturer expressly permits the modification or suitable professional advice confirms that it is safe and appropriate.
Unauthorised modifications may compromise product safety, structural integrity or intended operation and may affect applicable manufacturer warranty conditions.
Nothing in this section limits any rights or remedies available under Australian Consumer Law.
10. Professional Installation
If you are unsure how to install a product safely, Mickagear recommends obtaining appropriate professional installation assistance.
Professional installation may be particularly appropriate where installation involves:
- vehicle structural components;
- roof-rack systems;
- specialised mounting hardware;
- electrical equipment;
- drilling or modification; or
- equipment with significant weight or load requirements.
Always follow the manufacturer’s installation requirements. Where professional installation is specified or necessary for safe use, obtain suitable assistance before using the product.
11. Stop Using Unsafe Equipment
If a product becomes damaged, loose, unstable or otherwise appears unsafe:
STOP USING IT.
Do not continue using equipment simply because it appears to be functioning.
Where it is safe to do so, secure the equipment and prevent further use until the issue has been assessed.
Contact Mickagear or the relevant manufacturer for assistance where appropriate.
If you believe a product is defective or unsafe, retain relevant order information and photographs where it is safe and practical to do so.
12. Customer Responsibility and Australian Consumer Law
Customers are responsible for using products safely and in accordance with applicable manufacturer instructions, warnings and specifications.
Customers should take reasonable care when selecting, installing, inspecting and using products, including ensuring that equipment is suitable for the intended application.
However, customer responsibilities do not remove or reduce any rights a customer has under the Australian Consumer Law (ACL).
Mickagear does not seek to exclude, restrict or modify any consumer guarantee, right, remedy or liability that cannot lawfully be excluded, restricted or modified.
Nothing in this policy overrides a customer’s rights under applicable Australian law.
